Our Basque Country Culture and Wine Experience offers you an insight into this extraordinary and unique region of Europe.
The Basque Country is an autonomous community in northern Spain and southern France, close to The Pyrenees. The Basques have a unique culture, language and many traditions which differ greatly from their Spanish and French neighbours. Here are ten facts relating to the Basque culture:
1. The Basque language has seven different dialects.
2. The Basque language is also spoken in part of France.
3. The Basques are one of the oldest ethnic groups in Europe.
4. Basque is one of the oldest living languages.
5. Basques have their own unique festivals – the most famous being the running of the bulls in Pamplona.
6. Folklore plays an important part in the culture.
7. They have their own unique drink – Txakoli
8. They have their own national sport – Pelote
9. Rural sports still exist – mainly stone lifting and log chopping!
10. Eating is a national pastime! Home to many Michelin-starred restaurants
During our Basque Country Experience you will stay at the Hotel Iturregi located in Getaria, north east Spain, close to San Sebastian. The hotel is set amongst the Txakoli vineyards, with a beautiful facade of large windows which offer spectacular views of the Getaria lighthouse and the entire Basque coast. Hotel Iturregi offers its guests a space of peace and tranquility.
Modern and classic styles blend seamlessly in the interior of the hotel. Outside, the building blends in naturally with the picturesque setting that surrounds it. The swimming pool, built on the ruins of the original farmhouse called Iturregi, is the ideal place to relax.
With views of the Gipuzkoan coast, lovers of the sea, beach and nautical sports will find in the nearby towns (Zarautz and Getaria) all kinds of activities such as surfing, sailing, fishing … or simply relaxing on the beaches sunbathing.
Ideal place for mountain walks and hiking trails. One of the main routes of the Camino de Santiago passes near the hotel.
Our Experience includes a visit to the Getaria Museum, a specialised centre dedicated to the life and work of Cristóbal Balenciaga.
The Museum also runs exhibition initiatives on other subjects related to the world of fashion and art, paying special attention to local ties with Donostia-San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa and the Basque Country.
The Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum Collection is dedicated to the famous designer from Getaria, who dominated 20th century Haute Couture.
No visit to the Basque Country would be complete without a wine tasting tour:
‘Txakoli’ is a lightly sparkling white wine predominantly from the Basque region: its green bottles dominate bars of Basque towns. This half-day tour lifts the lid on its secrets at two ‘Txakoli’-producing coastal towns: Getaria and Zarautz. Tour both towns, and visit a Getaria ‘Txakolindegi’ (winery) to see and learn about its vineyards and taste its wines alongside local delicacies.

The Basque Country straddles in two different countries – northwest Spain and southwest France. Though called a country, it’s not an independent territory. The inhabitants are an entirely different ethnic group and are thought to be the oldest ethnic group in Europe.
“From the very moment we contacted the InspireMeTravel team to arrange our honeymoon to India (New Delhi) and Sri Lanka (The Cape Weligama) the service far exceeded our expectations. The professionalism of providing us with a proposal detailing the entire trip from the moment we left the UK, flights, hotels, excursions, internal transfers and the flight back home were amazing. As part of the service we were provided with a local mobile phone and a representative should we need to contact anyone, this was a true first class service. We had a complication due to weather conditions that our sea plane was not able to fly and again, without any interruption to our holiday the InspireMeTravel team took care of everything keeping in contact with us the entire time. We have used them for all our holidays since our honeymoon, they will not disappoint. Well done to Karen and Jill in particular.”
"In my opinion, one of the best wines I’ve ever tasted! Such a stunning hotel with gorgeous views of the vineyards that this hotel is set in and only 15 mins drive to North Cyprus’ harbour, which offers lovely restaurants surrounding it so you can experience more of the tasty North Cypriot cuisine.
The rooms in the hotel are First Class with different themes for each and the only hotel In North Cyprus with its own wine. Definitely recommend."
"If you want to see an opera with the magical atmosphere and feel as if you are actually with the characters then go to the Opera Arena in Verona. Such an amazing experience. Verona also has the Romeo and Juliet museum where you can actually stand in Juliets Courtyard and in her balcony. Definitely a must."
"What a fantastic way to see all the main sites of Rome AND the Vatican. With top historians who have amazing knowledge of this beautiful City. Would definitely recommend it."
"I joined Inspire Me Travel group tour of the famous Mona Lisa’s family home. The landscape features in the background of the famous Mona Lisa painting – how amazing is that! First impressions from the group was “Wow”, the ambience, the scenery, the home was breathtakingly beautiful. We were free to walk around the beautiful gardens and then joined a wine tour, which was very informative. The group were then shown to our outside dining table on the terrace, where we could marvel at the view whilst sampling the wines which accompanied our lunch. There is a shop where you can buy wines and other gifts, what an opportunity to take a bottle of Mona Lisa wine home with you, so you can share this truly special experience with your friends! I would highly recommend booking this tour with Inspire Me Travel. It was so very well organised."
"I joined Inspire Me Travel group tour of the Paris Jazz clubs in February this year. What a truly wonderful experience. Our first night was at Ducs des Lombard, for the truly discerning jazz enthusiast, it did not disappoint. The following evening was at the famous Caveau de la Huchette in the Latin Quarter; grab a seat and listen to the band; watch some amazing dancers and join in. It had a great atmosphere and was super friendly. Inspire Me Travel also organised wonderful restaurants (to suit our budget) close to the jazz venues. I would highly recommend booking with Inspire Me Travel they tick all the boxes!"
